How to Choose the Right Running Shoes

Choosing the right shoes can seem like a daunting task. But in this session, I’m going to break that down into a simple formula you can use to choose the right shoes for you.

The best way to decide what shoe is right for you is to have someone videotape you running and then slow down the video to look at your type of gait. Using that method, you can see if you have overpronation or supination.

But if you’re unable to do that, I’ve come up with a simple formula that you can use to determine what type of shoes are right for you.

Here’s a formula that can help you choose the right running shoes based on different factors:

  • IF you have flat feet, THEN look for shoes with motion control and stability features to prevent overpronation.
  • IF you have high arches, THEN look for shoes with extra cushioning to absorb shock.
  • IF you have neutral feet, THEN you can choose a range of shoes, from minimalist to cushioned, depending on your personal preference and running style.
  • IF you run on trails or rough terrain, THEN look for shoes with more grip and protection, such as trail running shoes.
  • IF you run on roads or tracks, THEN look for shoes with lightweight and responsive cushioning for a smooth ride.
  • IF you have a history of foot injuries or chronic pain, THEN consider consulting a podiatrist or a running specialist for a professional assessment and recommendation.
  • IF you’re on a budget, THEN consider looking for shoes that offer the best value for money, such as shoes with durable materials and versatile features.

By considering these factors and using this formula, you can choose the right running shoes that match your foot type, running style, and personal preferences. Remember to try on several pairs of shoes and take them for a test run before making a final decision.

How to Pick Which of These Great Running Shoes & Gear are for You:

As an elite marathon runner, my recommend is for you look through the above list and find the shoe that fits best for you. Even if it’s a few dollars more than the cheapest one on this list.

I feel like all the shoes on this list are relatively similar in costs and any saving between them would be negligible compared to the cost of getting injured from wearing the wrong shoe.

That being said Brooks make some of the best running shoes, which is why they ranked #1. Although, there is another brand that makes some shoes that may rival those on this list. Nike does make good running shoes but they tend to only fit a very select group of people.

So whether you’re looking for an everyday trainer or the next shoe for your marathon, I’d recommend any of the above footwear.

How to Run in Your New Running Shoes

There is some debate on whether you need to wear in your running shoes or not. I’ve personally that most running shoes today are made well enough that you don’t need to wear them in. What I’ve found is that typically when you do need to wear them in, it’s because they are not the right fitting shoe for you. So I recommend you can start training in them the day you get them.
